Q: What initially drew you to becoming a Flight Instructor?
 
Capt. Roxas: Being an FI is the strongest foundation for becoming a well-rounded pilot, ultimately leading to a career as an airline pilot. The discipline and professionalism demanded by this role truly set it apart.

 

Q: How long have you been an FI, and what motivated you to pursue this path?
 
Capt. Roxas: I’ve held my Flight Instructor license since 2016. My Flight Instructors were incredible role models, and their passion for flying truly ignited my own. Their constant inspiration motivated me to pursue this rewarding career.

 

Q: What is the most fulfilling aspect of being a Flight Instructor?
 
Capt. Roxas: There’s nothing quite like witnessing a student pilot’s progress. Flight instruction is a two-way learning experience. Every flight offers me the chance to learn alongside my students.

 

Q: Can you share a particularly memorable teaching experience?
 
Capt. Roxas: Basic maneuvers are the cornerstone of every pilot’s journey. During pre-solo lessons, I see the pure joy and wonder in my students’ eyes. It’s a privilege to witness them fulfill their childhood dreams and experience the freedom of flight for the very first time.

Q: What guidance would you offer those considering a career as a Flight Instructor?
 
Capt. Roxas: Being an FI requires talent, but it’s also about embracing your unique approach. Stay true to yourself, prioritize flight principles, prioritize airmanship and safety above all else, and most importantly, enjoy every flight.

 

Q: How do you prioritize safety in your instruction?
 
Capt. Roxas: Pre-flight briefings are paramount. Beyond reviewing flight plans, we delve into hazard identification and risk assessment. This prepares students to avoid potential issues and teaches them to recognize common student errors during maneuvers.

 

Q: What are some of the biggest challenges you face as an FI, and how do you address them?
 
Capt. Roxas: The biggest hurdle is effectively communicating complex aviation knowledge. Interaction and clear communication are essential to spark a student’s interest. Understanding each student’s personality, while maintaining professional boundaries, is key to inspiring them on their pilot journey.

 

Q: In your view, what defines a truly exceptional Flight Instructor?
 
Capt. Roxas: Deep aviation knowledge is essential for building confidence in the cockpit. Strict adherence to regulations ensures a safe learning environment. Beyond that, it takes courage, patience, a focus on safety, situational awareness, strong decision-making skills, and the ability to inspire. And let’s not forget, a short pre-flight prayer is never a bad idea!
